1985 Series 3 XJ6 4.2 auto

Great car to finish restoration or fantastic spares car many new parts + spares to go with it to many to list. If you buy the car you will get a set of refurbished pepperpot alloy wheels, with nearly new tyres on for £50, otherwise I will sell these later on for £120 if the car does not sell. These are the correct wheels to finish off the car. Also drivers front wing painted gunmetal but as new and a perfect drivers door in same colour. A brand new handbrake cable for the car. A brand new outer sill which I think is drivers side. Also if you want it, there is a complete spare 4.2 engine and gearbox for it, as well as a large amount of spare parts for Series 3 XJ6.

Now read the text below before looking at photos of the work done to the car.

I have had this car for several years now and have done a massive amount of work to it. But the time has come to let it go Why? I also run a facelift XJS which costs time and money to keep. I am helping my son build a Tiger KitCar and I am very busy with work commitments, also space is now a real problem for the car and all it's spares. So the first question you need to answer if you are contemplating buying the car is, Do I have space?
There are several options for this car and the one I would love to see is the restoration being completed. You could use it as a donor for your own XJ6 a shame but a reality. The front subframe is compatible with the XJS and this one is solid, been overhauled and has recon brake calipers and stainless flexy hoses, see the photos later on, you would need to change the front springs for XJS version and fit shockers to suite.

The good bits work done so far

Here is basically what we have done to the car. Fitted an engine and gearbox from a donor car, taken head off and decoked it and full valve grinding etc, to my knowledge this head has not been converted to run on unleaded fuel but some people say they will run ok with unleaded I am not sure. All new gasketts and seals fitted see photos, whilst the head was off I removed all the engine block core plugs and pressure cleaned the build up of silt that takes place in these cast iron blocks so overheating will not be a problem with this car, fitted all new core plugs. Whilst engine was out removed front subframe and overhauled it including six shot and vee mountings, shockers, stainless flexy brake hoses fitted, see photos, repaired all chassis at front where required and waxoyled see photos, all wiring redone with tape, all brake pipes in engine bay replaced with copper, new throttle cable all areas painted and undersealed where required see photos, engine re-fitted. Rear subframe removed and overhauled 4 new springs and shockers just had to be done to get the beautiful glide ride back to this S3 XJ6. The drivers side IRS Radius arm mount was corroded and has been solidly repaired with welded plate. The radius arm bushes were replaced at both ends of the arms. Bearings and bushes replaced where required, new rear subframe mounts fitted, handbrake mechanisms freed and greased, binding rear pads removed cleaned etc stainless flexy hose fitted, frame cleaned de-scaled and re-painted etc etc, The rear diff is perfect and does not leak, see photos. All fuel lines front to back replaced with copper pipe and high pressure rubber hose, that includes all the pipes that run over the top of the subframe, a huge job with the changeover tank feeds etc. New fuel return solenoid valves fitted both sides of rear chassis. Main brake line replaced front to back in copper. New seals fitted to brake master cylinder and brakes bled out with new fluid, this car stops now. Only needs handbrake cable fitting for Mot. That is the general picture of what has been done to the car to date I have probably forgotten other bits we have done. There is a folder with a shedload of receipts for parts bought for the car, I do not want to work out what it has cost me let alone tell wife. The car is on SORN at the moment and I have the V5 Document in my Name.

The not so good bits, work needed to complete the car.

This car has the what I think is the awful fuel injection on it for the 4.2 big valve XK engine. I don't think this ever belonged on this car. Okay the car starts and runs, but on tickover it sounds and smells rich when cold but too rich, tends to hunt and has flat spot. I bought a rotbox Series II 4.2 and scrapped it after removing the nice twin SU carbs, complete with manifold, fuel pumps etc etc, with the intention of ripping the monster fuel injection system off and replacing with these carbs, a job I was really looking forward to doing. I used to work on jags back in the sixties and seventies as a mechanic and I loved tuning and balancing these SU carbs. You would have to contact Burlen Carburretors in the UK to re-jet these carbs for the big valve 4.2 head, but well worth it. If you intend to restore the car, you can have the carbs manifolds etc etc for £85. These are not to be sold seperate from this car. As you can see mechanically the car has been virually done, but bodywork needs doing as follows: Drivers side sill needs replacing and inner sill needs welding towards rear wheel. Front wings have the usual rot at the bottom adjacent to front door, one new wing supplied. The front and rear screens have some rust around them not to bad and I stopped it in it's tracks in 2005 with Granville industrial strength rust killer and then painted with por15 paint. Various bits of bodywork need doing, bumpers and tow bar need re-fitting I have all the bits, small bit of welding required in boot floor not much just a small patch. Rear quarter panels to go back on beneath fuel tanks, I have pretty good secondhand ones to go on. Re-spray the car properly and it will look great in it's metallic green, a good colour for a Jag. If you have a year of weekends holidays etc this is a a nice restoration to complete and giving you a very roadworthy classic car which will be sought after in the near future.

Finally

Since we got the rear subframe in, I have driven the car and it rides beautifully it has that super glide factor that soaks up the road, that I believe only comes with the early XJ6 cars. Gearbox is fine and lots of power from engine, but that injection is not right this car wants it's carbs. Even the electric sunroof works. Interior is good just needs tlc, speedo works when it wants to. Don't forget the refurbished alloy wheels with really good tyres on , to finish the car off perfectly. I have been as honest as I can be, just make sure you know what is involved to finish this restoration, but I believe it is worth and have put a lot of love and work into the car to that end. So over to any prospective buyers. You will need a transit style van and trailer for collection. --- You can email me at alan@jagcar.co.uk

Bonjour de Jaguar enthousiaste en France

A new site to visit from France, this is from Loeiz and a friend of his. You will see some of the work Loeiz put into a V12 XJS on this site. We have been e-mail friends for a long time now and Loeiz has asked me to put a link on here for French and English visitors alike. The site is called "Jaguar XJS Passion" and is mostly in French at the moment, but that will change in the future with more English content. However this is a very good site and you will see that both Loeiz and his friend are passionate about jaguars. So click on the link below and pay them a visit.

The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Website.

Hello I am a member of the "Jaguar Enthusiasts Club" of Great Britain. The club now has over 20,000 members worldwide. This site is mostly about Jaguar cars and is designed to be informative, mainly to other Jaguar enthusiasts and to anybody contemplating restoring a Jaguar car. All work on the cars on this website is carried out by myself and my 20 year old son, who has been helping me with the Jags since he was about 13 and without his help the restoration of these cars would not be possible.
